What is Panne Velvet Fabric

Panne velvet is made by weaving loops into the fabric which are then cut open, leaving short hairs standing on the surface. Those hairs get pressed flat during finishing, which is what creates the glossy, satin-like shine that panne velvet is known for compared to regular velvet. Because the pile can lie in different directions, the same piece of fabric can look lighter or darker depending on how you cut and handle it, so it pays to keep an eye on the nap direction when laying out your pattern pieces. This polyester version holds its shine well, resists creasing and keeps its softness wash after wash. It is a lightweight velvet, easier to work with on a home machine than heavier velvet fabrics.
