Composition and Properties

Our cotton voile fabric is made from 100% mercerised cotton and weighs only 75 grams per m². Thanks to the mercerising process, the fabric has a subtle silky sheen, improved colour fastness and a slightly firmer feel than regular cotton voile. With a width of 145cm, you have plenty of fabric for both curtains and clothing projects.

Voile is a light, semi-transparent woven fabric that allows air to pass through and drapes beautifully. The result is a fabric that is both elegant and functional — soft against the skin, breathable and with a beautiful flowing drape.

What is voile fabric?

Voile is a lightweight, semi-transparent fabric with an open weave structure. Thanks to its low weight and loose weave, the fabric drapes very fluidly and is breathable — ideal for curtains, summer clothing and delicate decoration.

What does mercerised cotton mean?

During the mercerising process, cotton fibres are treated with an alkaline solution under tension. This gives the cotton a silky sheen, better colour fastness, greater strength and less shrinkage than untreated cotton.

Is cotton voile suitable for curtains?

Yes, cotton voile is especially suitable as a light net curtain or curtain fabric. The semi-transparent weave softly filters daylight without darkening the room, while the flowing drape creates an elegant curtain look.

How should I wash cotton voile fabric?

Wash cotton voile at a maximum of 30°C, preferably on a delicate or hand-wash programme. Use a mild detergent and avoid tumble drying — let the fabric dry flat or hanging in the air to prevent distortion. Iron at a low temperature, preferably inside out or with a pressing cloth.

Does cotton voile shrink when washed?

Thanks to the mercerising process, shrinkage is limited, but some shrinkage during the first wash is possible. Our tip: pre-wash the fabric once at 30°C before processing it, so any shrinkage has already occurred before you start cutting and sewing.

Is voile fabric suitable for clothing?

Absolutely. Cotton voile is a popular choice for light summer dresses, blouses and scarves. Its soft, breathable structure makes it comfortable in warm weather, while the flowing drape gives garments an elegant look.

What is the difference between voile and batiste?

Both are lightweight, semi-transparent cotton fabrics, but batiste has a slightly denser weave and feels a little firmer. Voile has a more open weave structure and is even airier. Voile is more often used for curtains; for clothing, both fabrics are excellent choices.

How much fabric do I need for curtains?

For light net curtains, you generally calculate 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window for a beautiful pleated drape, plus extra for hems and the heading. For a window height of 250cm and a width of 150cm, you will quickly need 7 to 8 metres for two curtain panels.
