How blackout fabric works

Blackout curtain fabric owes its light-blocking property usually to a black thread woven into the middle of the fabric, between the top layer and the bottom layer. That black core absorbs incoming light, which is why dark-coloured curtain fabrics can block up to 90% of the light. With this white colour, just like with ecru, that black thread is left out to keep the pure, light colour true. This means the light-blocking effect is somewhat lower than with darker shades, but the fabric still holds back a large portion of the light and creates a soft, even light entry instead of harsh direct sunlight.
