What is this material

Many sewists wonder what iron thread actually is and why this Gütermann thread is often mentioned as a replacement for it. Iron thread used to be made from linen and was known as extremely tough, but the downside was that it could rot or weaken over time. This extra strong thread from Gütermann was developed as a modern alternative, made entirely from polyester instead of linen. This keeps the thread just as strong, but without the risk of rot or deterioration. The twist of thickness no. 40 creates a smooth, crisp thread that glides easily through the needle and doesn't fray easily.

Uses and projects

This type of sewing thread is often chosen for work where you really need to rely on seam strength. Think of:

• Attaching buttons and buttonholes extra securely
• Sewing garden cushions and outdoor fabrics that take a lot of wear
• Repairing sails, tarps and tents
• Making straps, rigging and dog collars
