What is mercerised cotton?

Mercerised cotton has been treated with sodium hydroxide, making the fibres smoother, stronger and more colourfast. The result is a fabric that feels glossier and softer than regular cotton, pills less and keeps its colour more vibrant — even after repeated washing.

What is the difference between the 2mm, 4mm and 9mm check sizes?

The check size determines how prominent the pattern appears. The 2mm check is fine and subtle — ideal for clothing where the pattern should be visible but not overpowering. The 4mm check is the classic, instantly recognisable gingham size for kitchen textiles, table decoration and casual clothing. The 9mm check has a bold, graphic character that works especially well on larger surfaces such as picnic blankets and curtains.

How do I wash cotton gingham fabric?

Machine washable at 30–40°C on a delicate cycle. Do not bleach. Dark colours such as black, navy and cobalt are best washed inside out to minimise colour loss. Do not tumble dry — hang the fabric to dry.

How do I iron this fabric?

Iron at a low to medium temperature, slightly damp or with steam for the crispest result. Use a pressing cloth on dark colours to prevent shiny marks.

Does the fabric shrink after washing?

Cotton fabrics may shrink 3–5% during the first wash. Although mercerised cotton shrinks less than untreated cotton, we recommend pre-washing the fabric at 30°C before cutting — especially for clothing projects that require an accurate fit.

Which needle should I use for sewing?

Use a universal needle size 80 for most applications. For finer projects such as shirts or baby clothing, a microtex needle size 70–80 works best. Use strong polyester thread for durable seams.

How much extra fabric do I need for pattern matching?

With 2mm, pattern matching is minimal — allow a maximum of 3–5% extra. With 4mm, allow 5–8% extra for projects where check lines need to match at the seams. With 9mm, 10–15% extra is recommended for neat corners and matching seams.

Are colours identical between batches?

Colours may vary slightly between dye lots and screens. For one project, we recommend ordering the required quantity at once, or first ordering a fabric sample for €0.50 to check the colour in your own lighting.
