What kind of fabric is this heavy stretch imitation suede?
This fabric is a heavy-quality imitation suede of around 300 g/m², made from polyester with a small percentage of elastane. It is double-brushed, has a luxurious suede look and feels soft and substantial.
Can I use the fabric on both sides?
Yes, the fabric is double-brushed. Both sides have a beautiful, soft suede surface, so you can use it reversibly without a visible “wrong” side.
Does the fabric have stretch and is it suitable for close-fitting garments?
Thanks to the elastane content, the fabric has a comfortable 4-way stretch. This makes it very suitable for fitted skirts, dresses, trousers, leggings, jackets and cardigans.
What are the best uses for this heavy suede fabric?
This quality is mainly used for winter coats, jackets, skirts, dresses, cardigans, trousers and leggings. It is also suitable for light interior projects such as decorative cushions, throws and wall or headboard panels.
Is this imitation suede suitable as upholstery fabric?
For decorative use, such as cushions, headboards or panels, the fabric works very well. For heavily used seating furniture we recommend dedicated upholstery fabrics with higher abrasion resistance.
How should I wash and care for this heavy suede fabric?
Always follow the care label on the product page. In general: wash on a delicate cycle at max. 30 °C or hand wash, use a mild detergent, do not bleach, do not tumble dry and do not wring. Lay flat to dry and iron at a maximum of 110 °C, preferably on the inside.
Which needle and stitch should I use when sewing this fabric?
Use a stretch or microtex needle (size 80–90) and a slightly longer straight stitch or small zigzag stitch. Always test your settings on a scrap piece first for the best result.
Does heavy imitation suede fray and do I need special seam finishes?
The fabric hardly frays. A simple zigzag stitch or overlock stitch is usually sufficient. For a more professional finish you can topstitch the seams or finish them with an overlocker.
