What is heavy (stretch) suede fabric?

Heavy suede – also known as stretch imitation suede or suedine – is a densely woven fabric with a double-brushed, velvety touch. Thanks to the elastane content, the fabric has a comfortable stretch that makes garments drape beautifully and feel pleasant to wear. With a weight of around 300 g/m², this quality feels substantial and full without being stiff.

Working with heavy suede – sewing tips

Despite its weight, our stretch imitation suede sews beautifully on a standard sewing machine. Use a stretch or microtex needle, a slightly longer stitch length, and always test on a small scrap. Because both sides are brushed, a lining is not required—but you may add one for extra comfort or a cleaner finish.

Is heavy suede fabric usable on both sides?

Yes, this heavy stretch imitation suede is double-brushed, so both sides have a beautiful soft suede look. You can use the fabric reversibly without a visible “wrong side”.

Does the fabric have stretch and is it suitable for fitted garments?

The composition (typically polyester with around 8% elastane) provides comfortable 4-way stretch. This makes the fabric very suitable for fitted skirts, dresses, trousers, cardigans and coats.

What projects is heavy suede fabric best suited for?

Heavy suede fabric is mainly used for winter coats, jackets, skirts, cardigans, trousers and interior accents such as cushions and throws. It gives every project a luxurious, warm appearance.

Is this imitation suede suitable for upholstery?

For light use, such as decorative cushions, headboards or wall panels, the fabric works very well. For intensively used upholstery (sofas, armchairs) we recommend dedicated upholstery fabrics with a higher abrasion resistance.

How should I wash and care for heavy suede fabric?

Always follow the care label of the specific article. In general: wash on a delicate cycle or by hand, use a mild detergent, do not bleach and do not tumble dry. Lay flat to dry to keep the shape and surface looking nice.

Do I need special seam finishes on this fabric?

Because the fabric barely frays, a simple zigzag or overlock stitch is usually sufficient. For a more professional finish, you can topstitch seams or use an overlock machine.

Is heavy suede fabric warm enough for winter coats?

Yes, with a weight of around 300 g/m² and a dense structure, this fabric is very suitable for winter coats and jackets. For extra warmth you can add a lining or interlining.
