Our cotton gingham collection is available in three check sizes: 2mm, 4mm and 9mm. Each size is available in red, black, navy, cobalt and light blue.

2mm Cotton Gingham – Fine Check

The smallest check in our collection, with a fine 2mm pattern. This subtle structure gives the fabric a refined appearance: clearly recognisable as gingham up close, while appearing almost plain from a distance. Ideal for shirts, blouses, fine kitchen textiles, decorative napkins and formal table settings where a calm and delicate pattern is desired.

4mm Cotton Gingham – Classic Check

The classic 4mm check is the most iconic and versatile gingham size. Balanced, timeless and instantly recognisable, it is perfect for tea towels, aprons, table runners, children’s clothing, shirts, craft projects and decorative accessories.

9mm Cotton Gingham – Large Check

The largest 9mm check has a bold, graphic character that immediately stands out. It is ideal for projects where the pattern may be more visible, such as picnic blankets, large tea towels, aprons, bags, curtains and statement garments such as dresses and skirts.

What to Consider When Choosing Cotton Gingham Fabric

The best choice depends on your project and the visual effect you want to create. Consider the following points:

  • Check size and visual impact: A small 2mm check gives a subtle and refined effect. The 4mm check is the classic all-round option. The 9mm check creates a bolder, more retro look.
  • Colour choice: Red is traditional and nostalgic. Black gives a modern, graphic effect. Navy and cobalt are timeless and elegant, while light blue feels fresh and airy — perfect for summer projects.
  • Mercerised cotton: The mercerisation process makes the cotton smoother, stronger and more colourfast than regular cotton. This gives the fabric a beautiful finish, vibrant colours and sharp pattern lines.
  • Pattern matching: When cutting gingham fabric, it is important to align the check lines at seams. Allow a little extra fabric if your project requires precise pattern matching.
  • Weight and use: At 110 g/m², this is a light to medium-weight cotton fabric, suitable for clothing, kitchen textiles and light decorative applications. It is not intended for heavy upholstery.
  • Care: Machine washable at 30–40°C. Iron slightly damp for the crispest result. Dark colours such as black, navy and cobalt are best washed inside out to help preserve the colour.

What is the difference between gingham and checked fabric?

Gingham is a specific type of checked fabric with a regular two-tone pattern, usually created by evenly spaced horizontal and vertical stripes. Checked fabric is a broader term that can include many different types of checks, while gingham has a classic, symmetrical and often rustic appearance.

Which check size should I choose for kitchen textiles?

For kitchen textiles such as tea towels and aprons, the 4mm classic check is usually the most popular choice. It is clearly visible without being too bold. For larger items such as tablecloths and picnic cloths, the 9mm large check also works very well. The 2mm fine check gives a more delicate and refined look.

What is mercerised cotton and why is it better?

Mercerised cotton has been treated to make the cotton fibres smoother, stronger and more lustrous. The result is a fabric that feels softer, has a subtle sheen and retains colour better than regular cotton. For gingham fabric, this means vibrant colours and crisp, clear check lines.

Does cotton gingham fabric shrink after washing?

Cotton fabrics may shrink slightly during the first wash, usually around 3–5%. Although mercerised cotton tends to shrink less than untreated cotton, we recommend pre-washing the fabric at 30°C before cutting, especially for clothing projects where an accurate fit is important.

How do I match the gingham pattern when sewing?

Place your pattern pieces on the fabric so that the check lines meet at the seam lines. This requires a little extra fabric. For a 4mm check, allow approximately 5–10% extra fabric. For a 9mm check, allow around 10–15% extra. Pins or tailor’s chalk can help keep the pattern aligned before cutting.

Is cotton gingham fabric suitable for clothing?

Yes. With a weight of 110 g/m² and a width of 150 cm, this fabric is very suitable for shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts and children’s clothing. The smooth and lightweight quality of mercerised cotton makes it comfortable to wear, especially in warmer weather. The 2mm fine check is ideal for garments where a more subtle pattern is preferred.
