4mm Cotton Gingham Fabric – The Classic Gingham Check

The 4mm cotton gingham fabric is the heart of our gingham collection. With a check size of 4mm, this version represents the most iconic and recognisable size of the traditional gingham pattern — large enough to be instantly recognised as gingham, yet small enough to remain elegant and versatile. The fabric is woven from 100% mercerised cotton for an extra smooth, slightly glossy finish with excellent colour retention. With a width of 150 cm and a weight of 110 g/m², this is a lightweight, comfortable quality that is easy to sew and pleasant to wear.

The 4mm check has been associated for generations with classic tea towels, aprons and traditional household textiles. Today, gingham is used far beyond the kitchen — from summer fashion to trendy interior accents and festive table decoration. Why is the 4mm check the most popular size?

The 4mm check is the perfect middle ground in gingham: the pattern is clear and instantly recognisable as classic gingham, but not so large that it becomes overwhelming. This balance makes it universally suitable — from kitchen textiles and table decoration to clothing and interiors. It is also the most iconic size associated with the traditional gingham look.

What is the difference between 4mm and 2mm cotton gingham?

With 2mm gingham, the check is so fine that it almost appears plain from a distance — subtle and refined, ideal for formal clothing. With 4mm gingham, the pattern is immediately and clearly recognisable as classic gingham, making it more suitable for kitchen textiles, table decoration and casualwear where the pattern may be more visible.

How much extra fabric do I need for pattern matching at seams?

With a 4mm check, pattern matching is manageable. Allow approximately 5–8% extra fabric for projects where the check lines need to match at the seams, such as shirts, aprons and tablecloths with neat corners. For items where precise matching is less important — such as bags or curtains — hardly any extra fabric is needed.

Is this fabric suitable for outdoor use, such as picnic blankets?

The 4mm cotton gingham fabric is very suitable for picnic blankets and outdoor textiles. The mercerised cotton is strong, colourfast and washable at 40°C. For a picnic blanket, we recommend using the fabric double-layered or adding a firm interfacing layer for extra thickness and stability. The base fabric does not have a water-repellent coating.

Can I order a fabric sample before buying?

Yes. Fabric samples are available for all 9 colours via the "Fabric Sample (€0.50)" button on the product page. This is especially recommended for colours such as light grey, beige and light blue, which may appear differently on screens compared to the actual fabric colour.
