What makes rib knit different from other jersey fabrics

The ribbed structure is created during the knitting process. Alternating knit and purl stitches form vertical lines that run along the length of the fabric. This construction method makes rib knit more elastic than plain jersey, especially across the width.

It's a heavier fabric compared to single jersey, usually around 200-250 gsm. That extra weight gives it more body and helps garments hold their shape. You'll often see it used for cuffs, neckbands and waistbands because it can stretch and then bounce back without losing its structure.

Sewing with rib knit jersey fabric - what to keep in mind

Use a ballpoint or stretch needle when sewing rib knit. The rounded tip slips between the fibres instead of piercing them, which prevents runs and holes. A straight stitch will snap when the fabric stretches, so switch to a zigzag or a dedicated stretch stitch on your machine.

Pre-washing is a good idea. Rib knit can shrink slightly after the first wash, so laundering the fabric before cutting ensures your finished garment keeps its size. Press seams with a steam iron on a medium setting, but avoid dragging the iron across the fabric - lift and press instead to prevent distortion.
