Composition and Characteristics

This jersey rib fabric consists of 70% cotton, 25% polyester, and 5% elastane. Cotton provides breathability and a natural feel against the skin, while polyester adds durability and reduces wrinkling. The elastane content gives you two-way stretch, making the fabric flexible without losing its shape after washing.

The knitted corduroy structure creates raised vertical ribs on the surface. Unlike traditional woven corduroy, this knitted version has more give and recovers well after being stretched. You'll find it easier to sew than stiff woven alternatives, though you'll still need a ballpoint needle to prevent skipped stitches. Grammatuur typically ranges from 240 to 280 gsm, providing enough weight for garments that drape well without feeling heavy.

Two Rib Widths Available

We stock this ribfluweel jersey in two distinct rib sizes. Big Knitted Corduroy Jersey Fabric features wider wales that create a bold texture, popular for statement pieces like jackets and skirts. The wider ribs catch light differently and give a more pronounced visual texture.

Small Knitted Corduroy Jersey Fabric has finer ribs, closer together. This version works well for fitted garments where you want texture without bulk. The narrower wales also make it easier to match pattern pieces when sewing, as the ribbed lines are less dominant.

What You Can Make

Trousers and skirts are natural choices for this fabric. The stretch means you don't need as much ease in your pattern, and the corduroy texture hides minor fit issues better than smooth jerseys. Many sewists use it for pull-on styles where comfort matters as much as appearance.

Jackets and cardigans benefit from the fabric's structure. It holds shape better than standard jersey, so collars and cuffs don't sag after a few wears. Consider using fusible interfacing on buttonholes and pocket openings to prevent stretching during use.

For home projects, cushion covers in ribbed jersey cotton fabric add warmth to living spaces. The texture works particularly well in autumn and winter interiors. Dog beds made from this material resist wear — the polyester content helps it bounce back even after your pet kneads and circles before lying down.

Sewing and Care Tips

Always prewash this knitted corduroy jersey fabric before cutting. Cotton blends can shrink up to 5% in the first wash, and you don't want finished garments to become unwearable. Wash at 30°C and tumble dry on low if needed, though air drying preserves the ribs better.

Cut with the ribs running vertically on your body for the most flattering effect. Horizontal ribs can add visual width. Use pattern weights rather than pins where possible — pinning can distort the knit structure and make accurate cutting harder.

A walking foot helps feed the fabric evenly through your machine. Set your stitch length slightly longer than for wovens, around 3mm, and reduce presser foot pressure if your machine allows it. Test your tension on scraps first — the elastane can cause puckering if thread tension is too tight.
