Working with Brushed Suede Fabric

Cutting suede fabric requires attention to the nap direction - the brushed surface has a distinct grain that affects color depth depending on angle. Always lay out your pattern pieces in the same direction to avoid shading variations in the finished piece. A rotary cutter works better than scissors for clean edges, especially with heavier weights.

Sewing requires a universal or leather needle, depending on thickness. Pin within seam allowances only, as pinholes can leave permanent marks in the brushed surface. Use a longer stitch length than you would for woven cotton - around 3mm prevents puckering. A walking foot helps feed the fabric evenly, particularly useful when working with double-sided varieties where both layers have texture.

For pressing, always use a press cloth and low heat. Direct iron contact can flatten the nap permanently. Steam works well for removing creases without crushing the brushed finish. Test on a scrap piece first, especially if you're working with embossed suede patterns.
