Stretch Satin Fabric by the Metre

Stretch satin fabric combines the glossy sheen you know from classic satin with a comfortable amount of give, thanks to a small percentage of elastane woven into the polyester base. We stock two qualities: a lightweight everyday version and a heavier double-faced satin for garments where structure matters. Both drape well and take colour beautifully, which is why satin remains a standard choice for eveningwear, bridal fashion and lingerie. You order by the metre, from small test lengths up to full rolls, with a fabric swatch available first if you want to check colour and hand-feel before committing.

Two satin qualities, different uses

The lightweight stretch satin weighs 100 grams per m², is 145cm wide and made from 97% polyester with 3% elastane. It has a glossy face on the right side only and a matte reverse, which is the standard construction for satin weaves. This version drapes softly and suits lined dresses, blouses, flowing skirts and lingerie. It comes in a wide colour range, from black and navy through to saturated reds, pinks and greens.

The premium double-faced stretch satin is heavier at 160 grams per m², 150cm wide, same 97/3 polyester-elastane blend. The difference is in the finish: both sides are glossy, so there's no wrong side to worry about. That extra weight also gives it more body, which matters if you're making something unlined or reversible, such as a cape or a structured bridal piece where the inside of the garment stays visible.

Sewing notes

Satin shifts around under the needle more than most fabrics, so pin generously and cut on an anti-slip mat with sharp scissors or a rotary cutter. A stretch or microtex needle in size 75-90 with a stitch length of 2.0-2.5mm gives the cleanest result. Needle holes can stay visible on satin, so test on an offcut before you sew the actual garment. Iron on a low setting only, and always with a pressing cloth or from the reverse side, direct heat on the glossy face will dull it permanently.
