Chiffon Fabric Properties

Chiffon is one of the most popular fabrics in fashion and interior decoration — and for good reason. This fabric has several unique properties that make it stand out from other lightweight fabrics:

  • Semi-transparent: chiffon lets light pass through and gives garments an ethereal, romantic look
  • Lightweight: only 90 grams per m² — the fabric feels almost weightless but drapes beautifully
  • Flowing drape: chiffon falls softly and moves elegantly with every movement
  • Subtle sheen: the characteristic soft shine gives a luxurious, refined appearance
  • Breathable: the open weave structure allows air to pass through, ideal for warm days and summer projects
  • Width: 150cm for maximum cutting freedom

What is Chiffon?

Chiffon is a lightweight, semi-transparent fabric with an open weave structure and a subtle, silky sheen. The name comes from the French word for “cloth” or “rag” — but that name certainly does not do this elegant fabric justice. Originally, chiffon was woven from silk, but today it is mainly made from polyester, making the fabric more affordable, washable and colourfast while still keeping its elegant appearance.

Chiffon is sometimes confused with voile fabric — understandably, because both fabrics are light and semi-transparent. The difference lies in the weave structure: voile has a slightly more regular, open weave and is usually made from cotton, while chiffon has a finer, more even texture with its characteristic soft sheen. What Can You Use Chiffon Fabric For?

Chiffon is one of the most versatile lightweight fabrics for fashion, bridalwear and decoration. Popular uses include:

  • Elegant evening dresses and formal gowns where movement and transparency are desired
  • Summer blouses and tunics with a light, flowing drape
  • Bridalwear — as an overlay, train, veil or decorative layer
  • Scarves, wraps and headscarves or hijabs
  • Skirts with a romantic, airy appearance
  • Decorative curtains and light net curtains
  • Table decoration, garlands and party decoration
  • Overlays and decorative layers over other fabrics

Chiffon Fabric or Silk Fabric?

Chiffon and silk can look similar — both are light, glossy and fluid. The main difference is in the price, care and durability. Silk chiffon is the luxury original — softer, warmer and with an even deeper sheen — but it is also much more expensive and more delicate to wash and wear. Our polyester chiffon offers the same elegant appearance at a fraction of the price, is machine washable and holds its colour better. For most fashion creations, bridalwear and decorative applications, polyester chiffon is the practical and affordable choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chiffon Fabric

What is chiffon fabric?

Chiffon is a lightweight, semi-transparent fabric with an open weave structure and a subtle, silky sheen. It is mainly made from polyester and is known for its flowing drape, airy appearance and breathable wearing comfort. Ideal for elegant dresses, blouses, scarves and bridalwear.

What are the properties of chiffon fabric?

Chiffon is light (90 grams/m²), semi-transparent, breathable and has a flowing drape with a subtle sheen. The fabric moves beautifully with every gesture and gives garments a romantic, elegant look. It is not stretchy — for a stretch version, view our Bubble Chiffon Stretch.

What is the difference between chiffon and voile fabric?

Both fabrics are light and semi-transparent, but chiffon is made from polyester with a fine, even texture and soft sheen. Voile is usually made from cotton with a slightly more open, regular weave and less shine. Voile is often used for curtains; chiffon is especially popular for fashion and bridalwear.

Is chiffon fabric suitable for dresses?

Yes, chiffon is especially suitable for dresses — from light summer dresses to elegant evening dresses and bridal gowns. Its flowing drape and semi-transparent appearance make it ideal for romantic silhouettes. For fitted dresses, chiffon is often combined with a lining or underlayer.

Can I wash chiffon fabric?

Yes, polyester chiffon can be machine washed at 30°C on a delicate or hand-wash programme. Use a mild detergent, do not bleach and do not tumble dry. Let the fabric air dry and iron at a low temperature with a pressing cloth — never directly on the shiny side.

How do I sew chiffon fabric?

Chiffon is a slippery fabric that can shift easily when cutting and sewing. Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter on an anti-slip mat, and use enough pins. Sew with a fine microtex needle size 70–80 and a short stitch length. French seams or overlock finishing give the best results with transparent fabrics.

What is the difference between chiffon and bubble chiffon?

Regular chiffon is smooth and has no stretch. Bubble chiffon has a playful, slightly textured surface created by a special weave and contains 3% elastane for extra stretch and freedom of movement. Bubble chiffon is slightly heavier (130 grams/m²) and gives garments more body and texture.

Is chiffon fabric suitable for headscarves and scarves?

Yes, chiffon is one of the most popular fabrics for headscarves, hijabs and scarves. The light, breathable structure makes it comfortable to wear, while the flowing drape creates an elegant look. With more than 20 colours, there is always a shade to match every outfit.
