Poplin Cotton Fabric

Poplin Cotton Fabric by the Metre
Poplin cotton fabric is a tightly woven fabric with a fine rib, made from combed cotton yarns that give it a smooth, slightly lustrous surface. This category is where you find our full range of cotton poplin, sold by the metre and suited to both dressmaking and lighter home textile work. The weave is dense but the cloth stays breathable, which is why it turns up so often in shirts, blouses and children's clothing. Colours run into the dozens, so matching a project or building a small collection of basics is straightforward.
Compared to heavier options like canvas fabric cotton, poplin drapes more softly and suits garments rather than upholstery. If you want a similar natural look with a rawer finish, cotton unbleached fabric is worth a look too.
Mercerized Cotton Poplin, 150 cm Wide
Our core poplin is 100% mercerized cotton. Mercerizing is a finishing process where the fibres are treated with an alkaline solution under tension, which tightens the weave and gives the yarn a slight sheen. The result is a fabric with better colour retention and a bit more strength than untreated cotton. At 125 grams per square metre and 150 cm wide, it sits in the lighter to mid-weight range, comfortable against the skin and easy to press with a normal iron setting.
Colours and Prints
The plain poplin comes in more than 40 colours, from muted neutrals to saturated brights, so you can plan a whole outfit or a set of matching accessories from one roll. There's also a dedicated children's print line with playful motifs, aimed at kids' clothing and small accessories rather than adult wear. If you're after a similar handle in a heavier weight or with a shinier finish, satin fabric or panne velvet fabric are worth comparing for contrast pieces or linings.
What You Can Make with This Fabric
- Blouses, shirts and dresses, thanks to the crisp but breathable hand of the weave
- Skirts and lighter trousers where structure matters more than stretch
- Children's clothing using the printed poplin range
- Scarves, bags and other small accessories
- Table runners, cushion covers and lightweight curtains for a home textile project
It's not built for heavy-duty upholstery. For that, canvas fabric cotton or a burlington fabric will hold up better under daily wear.
