What to Consider When Choosing Deco Fabrics
The right decorative fabric depends on your application, the atmosphere you want to create and the practical requirements of the project. Pay close attention to light transmission, weight, care, texture and durability.
- Light transmission: Transparent and semi-transparent fabrics such as organza, cotton voile and unbleached cotton filter light softly. Blackout curtain fabric blocks light almost completely. Texture fabrics, canvas and washed cotton sit somewhere in between.
- Weight and drape: Lightweight fabrics such as organza, cotton voile and unbleached cotton create an airy, fluid effect. Heavier fabrics such as canvas, upholstery leather, texture fabric and big knit provide more structure and body.
- Care and maintenance: Always check whether the fabric is washable or better suited to professional cleaning. Cotton fabrics are generally machine washable; upholstery leather and cork can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
- Durability: For upholstery, bags and items that receive intensive use, choose a sturdy material such as canvas, upholstery leather or texture fabric.
- Style and mood: Rustic with jute, canvas and unbleached cotton; luxurious with velvet, satin and upholstery leather; playful with teddy, velboa and big knit; airy and romantic with organza and cotton voile.
- Width and fabric use: Most deco fabrics are 140–150 cm wide. For curtains, always calculate extra fabric for gathers, hems and any pattern repeat.

Frequently Asked Questions about Deco Fabrics
Which fabric is best for curtains?
That depends on the desired effect. For light, airy curtains and sheers, choose organza, cotton voile or unbleached cotton. Cotton voile is ideal when you want to softly filter natural light with an airy, natural look. For warmth and privacy, texture fabrics or washed cotton are suitable. For complete blackout, use blackout curtain fabric.
What is cotton voile fabric?
Cotton voile is a lightweight, semi-transparent cotton fabric with a soft drape and airy structure. The fabric lets light through without being fully see-through, making it highly suitable for sheers, lightweight curtains, decorative draping and summer clothing such as blouses, tunics and dresses.
Can deco fabrics be used for clothing projects?
Yes. Fabrics such as organza, cotton voile, satin, panne velvet and double gauze are also widely used in fashion, for example for bridal wear, evening wear, summer blouses, tunics, dresses and baby clothing. Many deco fabrics are multi-purpose.
How much fabric do I need for curtains?
For curtains, allow 2 to 2.5 times the width of your window for a good gather. Add the desired length plus hem allowance, usually around 10 cm at the top and bottom. With patterned fabrics, also allow for pattern repeat.
Are deco fabrics machine washable?
Most cotton deco fabrics, such as poplin, cotton voile, waffle cotton, double gauze and canvas, are machine washable at 30–40°C. Upholstery leather and cork can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Panne velvet and satin are best washed carefully by hand or professionally cleaned.
What is the difference between blackout and dimout curtain fabric?
Blackout curtain fabric blocks virtually all light and is ideal for bedrooms, children’s rooms and home cinemas. Dimout fabrics strongly reduce light but do not always create complete darkness. Our range features the fully light-blocking blackout variant.
Which fabric should I use for furniture upholstery?
For furniture upholstery, choose a sturdy, hard-wearing fabric such as upholstery leather, canvas or texture fabric. For decorative cushions, headboards and soft interior accents, panne velvet, teddy, big knit and satin are excellent choices.
Can I order fabric samples before buying?
Yes. Fabric samples are available for most deco fabrics via the "Fabric sample (€0.50)" button on each product page. This allows you to assess colour, texture, light transmission and quality before ordering larger quantities.
Do you offer wholesale prices for deco fabrics?
Yes. Wholesale price tiers are displayed on individual product pages and apply from specified quantities. For larger production orders, roll purchases or business enquiries, contact us for custom pricing and availability.
