Frequently Asked Questions about Fiberfill and Pillow Filling
What is the difference between fiberfill and polyester wadding?
Fiberfill and polyester wadding are essentially the same material in practice — both are made from fine polyester fibres. “Fiberfill” often refers to loose, fluffy filling for cushions and soft toys, while “polyester wadding” usually refers to the compressed roll version sold by the metre. Both are suitable as filling and insulating material.
What thickness of fiberfill do I need for cushions?
For decorative cushions and throw pillows, 100–150 gram/m² is a good choice. For firmer sleeping or seat cushions, choose 200–300 gram/m². Want an extra thick, luxurious cushion? Go for 300–400 gram/m² or combine several layers.
Can I wash fiberfill?
Yes, polyester fiberfill is machine washable. Wash at 40°C with a mild detergent. The filling dries quickly and keeps its shape well after washing. For loose filling in cushions or soft toys, we recommend washing the finished item inside out so the filling stays in place.
How do I work with polyester wadding?
Polyester wadding is easy to cut with sharp scissors or a rotary cutter. You can sew the wadding with a regular domestic sewing machine — use a universal needle size 80–90. For thicker versions (300–400 gram/m²), a jeans or leather needle can be useful for smoother feeding.
What is the difference between the 1000 gram bag and rolls by the metre?
The 1000 gram bag contains loose, fluffy filling fibres — ideal for filling or topping up cushions, soft toys and pouffes. The rolls are compressed wadding in fixed thicknesses, designed to be used as a layer in quilts, quilted clothing and bags. Choose the bag for loose filling and the roll for an even filling layer.
Is polyester fiberfill suitable for people with allergies?
Yes, polyester fiberfill is non-allergenic and an excellent alternative for people with allergies to down, feathers or wool. The synthetic fibres do not harbour dust mites and are hygienic and easy to wash.
How many metres of fiberfill do I need for a cushion?
For a standard decorative cushion of 50×50cm, you need approximately 0.6 metres at 200 gram/m² (fabric for the front and back plus the filling layer). For thicker filling or larger cushions, calculate more. When in doubt, order a little extra — fiberfill is affordable by the metre and it is a shame to run short.
Can I use polyester wadding as thick interlining?
Yes, polyester wadding is widely used as batting/interlining in quilts, quilted jackets and bags. The lighter versions (60–100 gram/m²) are most suitable for clothing and bags, while the heavier versions (200–400 gram/m²) provide more insulation for blankets and outerwear.
